Biography
Dr. Elena Tsalaporta is a Lecturer in the Discipline of Process and Chemical Engineering at University College Cork (UCC). She received her BE and ME from the Department of Chemical Engineering in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece, in 2010 and for one year, she worked as a Chemical and Safety Engineer in Macedonian Tube Mills at Thessaloniki. In 2012, Elena was awarded with a PhD Scholarship from the Earth and Natural Sciences Institute of University College Dublin (UCD) and she completed her Doctorate studies in 2016 under the supervision of Professor J.M.D. MacElroy. Her PhD research involved the examination and comparison of different adsorbents for the capture of CO2 from flue gases or the atmosphere. During her PhD internship, Elena worked for three months in the European Cement Research Academy (ECRA) in Dusseldorf in a collaborative project with Verein Deutscher Zementwerke (VDZ).
After the completion of her PhD, Elena spent 2 years as a Postodoctoral Research Engineer at CRANN Institute of Trinity College, working with Prof. Wolfgang Schmitt in a Direct Air Capture (DAC) project with the involvement of a Trinity based spin out company called Trinity Green Energies (TGE). Elena joined UCC in September 2017 where she will continue working on Carbon capture and direct air capture projects with emphasis on the development of new processes and materials for this purpose.
