Professor Mark McEntee appointed Vice Head for Learning and Teaching at College of Medicine and Health UCC

Professor McEntee will lead the curriculum development, evidence-based teaching, reflective teaching practice and the scholarship of learning and teaching.

He will also work with the Vice Head for Interprofessional Learning to promote transdisciplinary learning in the College.

Professor McEntee is Head of the Discipline of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy, Chair of Radiography at UCC and Course Director for the MSc Diagnostic Radiography and MSc Radiation Therapy. He is one of the world’s cited Medical Radiation Scientists, recognised through Honorary appointments as a Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of South Denmark and the University of Sydney.

A native of Threemilehouse Co. Monaghan, Professor McEntee graduated from Ulster University with a BSc in Radiography, University College Dublin with a PhD, and University of Sydney with a PgC in Teaching and Learning.

Professor McEntee said: “I am excited to be taking up this pivotal leadership position at the College of Medicine and Health at a time of immense global change and opportunity. I look forward to working with colleagues across the University, to facilitate academics in achieving their teaching and learning goals, from enhanced feedback to scholarship.”

“Health care is a team activity with multidisciplinary teams delivering the best care. It is essential to build on, enhance the learning and teaching delivered to our students to give our future practitioner an understanding of their and other roles in the healthcare team. Prof. McEntee brings huge experience. Mark is the recipient of ten highly prestigious awards and has published over 300 original papers in the highest-ranked radiological journals. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Irish Institute of Radiography and Radiation Therapy. I look forward to working with Prof. McEntee in this key role as we continue to strengthen our teaching and academic excellence at the College of Medicine and Health”.

Prof. McEntee’s research has been disseminated through major international imaging meetings, including the annual meetings of the Radiological Society of North America, European Congress, UK Radiological Congress, International Society of Optical Engineering and Medical Imaging Perception Society.

Mark’s research interests include radiation dose optimisation in CT and X-ray examinations, imaging across the life span, breast cancer assessment, medical image perception, and enhanced detection of disease and injury. His teaching leadership has been recognised by an Australian University Teacher of the year award, 2017 and a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Higher Degree Teaching in 2014.
