NVivo Training Workshop - May 19th & 20th 2020
This year the NVivo Training Workshop, facilitated by Ben Meehan of QTRAINING LTD, was held online. This is always a very popular workshop, and feedback from this years workshop was excellent. Day One covered an Introduaction to NVivo - Building your Qualitative Database, while Day Two covered analysising your data.
The 7 C’s of Career Success Workshop with Maeve Lankford - February 20th 2020
Content:
- Creating the conditions for success – the results formula
- Clarity, Commitment and Congruence – knowing what you want and creating the conditions to get it
- Calendar – creating structures and daily/weekly practices that enable the results you want
- Conversations – positive self-talk & how to articulate your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
- Connections – building your networks with peers & potential employers
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop participants had:
- Greater confidence in approaching project completion and job search
- Enhanced awareness of your unique proposition in the employment/research context
- Enhanced capacity to articulate your niche/USP and give it voice
- Developed practices for optimising successful attainment of goals
- Analysis of existing networks and whether/where and how to enhance and grow same

Winter Gathering - December 5th 2019
This year Winter Gather was very well attended by Postgraduate students from across the College of Medicine na dHealth. It was a great evening and occasion for the students to meet up and celebrate with one another, a well deserved break from their studies. Thanks to the hardworking staff of the Brookfield Cafe for the wonderful meal that was served. THe dinner was followed by a very fun table quiz.
Ethics Workshop with Prof David Kerins - November 26th 2019
This workshop was given by Prof David Kerins, Chair of CREC (Clinical Research Ethics Committee).
Mindfulness Workshop with Maura O'Neill - November 12th 2019
Maura O'Neill gave a workshop on Mindfulness for Research Students, and those students that attended said they found it very interesting and felt that they came away with Mindfulness techniques that they will be able to use during their daily lives as researchers.
Coffee Morning: Social event to Welcome Students - October 30th 2019
This social event was an oppertunity for postgraduate students, both those new to the College of Medicine & Health and those that have been established a while, to meet each other and meet members of the CoMH Postgradute Student Committee. This Student Committee is an important forum for Postgraduate Students. The coffee morning was held in the Jennings Gallery Brookfield which was a lovely space for such an event.
Viva Preparation Workshop - October 9th 2019
This workshop was run by Prof Eileen Savage, Vice-Dean of Graduate Studies. In the workshop, Prof Savage discussed how students should prepare for their Viva Voce examination, from the beginins for their research. The workshop was well attended, from a variety of disciplines within the College. Prof Savage said the students engaged well with the workshop.
PhD Writing Workshop with Dr Daniel Soule - September 18th
Dr Daniel Soule had previously given very beneficial workshops for CoMH Postgraduate Student. Dr Soule returned on September 18th to give a well attended writing workshop. Dr Soule is a writer and former academic who completed his PhD in Linguistics in Glasgow, UK. The workshop focused on the writing of aPhD thesis and Dr Soule covered areas such as drafting, editing and proofing as well as how to write methodologies and writing about evidence and data.
NVivo Training Workshops - June 25th & 26th
These workshops were facilitated by Ben Meehan of QTRAINING PLC. They took place over two days in June. Day One was an Introduaction to NVivo - Building your Qualitative Database, while Day Two covered analysising your data. Thanks to the School of Education and the School of Applied Social Studies for allowing CoMH Graduate Studies the use of the Crossleigh Computer Lab.
Summer BBQ - June 6th 2019
This year's Graduate School Summer BBQ took place on Thursday, 6th June 2019, in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, University College Cork. The weather didn't want to play ball, but despite being indoors the BBQ was a very enjoyable occasion. The BBQ provided an excellent opportunity for Postgraduate Research Students from the different School within the College of Medicine & Health to mix and get to know each other.
'Writing a Good Research Paper' Workshop - April 25th 2019
This workshop was run by Prof Ivan Perry, Head of the School of Public Health UCC. In his workshop, Prof Perry talked about the essential aspects editors look for in scientific papers and provided some essential tops and tricks to writing a successful article! Writing papers for scientific journals is an integral part of the postgraduate students career - for that reason, this session provided students with very valuable information on how to simplify the procrss of scientific writing.
SPSS Workshop - April 9th & 18th 2019
This workshop was run by Kathleen O'Sullivan, from the School Mathematical Sciences UCC. This was a two-day Short Course Introductory to Intermediate SPSS. On the first day students covered Data Management and Manipulation, Summarising Categorical and Numeric Variables. And then on day two Normality Checks and Data Distributions, Estimation: Confidence Intervals, and Comparing Means Parametric and Nonparametric tests.

Escape Room - March 14th 2019
A visit to some Escape Rooms was organised as a social event, to allow for an oppertunity for students from the various Schools within the College to meet and socialise. Those who did attend found it enjoyable. It is planned that other similar events will be organised in the future.

Media Skills Training Workshop - October 2nd 2018
Facilitated by Amanda Dunleavy of Grow Communications. Students that attendedcommented that they found the workshop very beneficial, learned a lot from the content provided, and enjoyed the small group size.

Building Resilience in Academics - May 16th
Facilated by Resilience International and the Stress Management Institute, the aim of this workshop was to provide Postgraduate students with the understanding and skills, to allow them to maintain their resilience while working in an academic environment and to cope with the stresses that this can bring. Student who attended said that it was engaging workshop.

This year's Winter Gathering was one of the best attended and was filled with great food and company. Postgraduate students from all across the College of Medicine and Health were able to meet up and celebrate with one another - a well deserved break from their hard work. The dinner was followed by a quiz which was nothing short of competitive. There were plenty of prizes won on the night.
Introductory to Intermediate SPSS Workshop - December 5th & 12th
Run by Kathleen O'Sullivan from the School of Mathematical Sciences, this annual workshop proved to be extremely useful and beneficial to students and provided them with an insight into statistics and using SPSS. The workshop was held over two days.
Carr Communications Leadership Workshop - November 16th
The Graduate School, in conjunction with Carr Communications, ran a Leadership Training Programme for postgraduate students. The training proved to be extremely popular. Participants learned about different leadership styles and personality types. They came away feeling more confident in their leadership ability and with key skills to develop themselves even further.
Writing your PhD Thesis - September 26th
After a very beneficial workshop last year, Dr Daniel Soule returned on September 26th to run another popular writing workshop. Dr Soule is a writer and former academic who completed his PhD in Linguistics in Glasgow, UK. This time the focus was on writing your PhD thesis and Dr Soule covered areas such as drafting, editing and proofing as well as how to write methodologies and writing about evidence and data. Their was huge interest in this years workshop and as a result it was very well attended by doctoral and MD students from all over the College of Medicine and Health.
Summer BBQ
The Graduate School Summer BBQ took place on Thursday, 8th June 2017, in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, University College Cork. The rain didn't spoil the fun for the postgraduates who had a fun-filled evening with good food & drink and a very entertaining quiz to finish off a very successful night! The Graduate School said hello to some incoming graduates and goodbye to some of those who were finishing up. A good time was had by all.
SPEAK Workshop
Inspired by Toastmasters® and other ‘Public Speaking’ workshops, SPEAK, which ran every month, was a huge success! The aim of speak was to improve postgraduate public speaking skills and confidence by giving students practical experience and assistance in delivering a speech in front of a relatively large peer group. There were spot prizes during the workshops and on the whole attendees found it very beneficial
Tai Chi
Indra San Lazaro, PhD student at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, led a Tai Chi Workshop in mid-May. Indra provided the basic movements and breathing techniques of Tai Chi to help increase focus, improve balance and reduce levels of stress. The workshop was enjoyable and provided students with some very useful tips.

In his workshop, Prof. Perry talked about the essential aspects editors look for in scientific papers and provided some essential tops and tricks to writing a successful article! Writing papers for scientific journals is an integral part of the postgraduate students career - for that reason, this session provided students with the secret to making scientific writing simple!
Writing Workshop with Dr Dan Soule
On October 5th, Dr Daniel Soule led a very beneficial Writing Workshop. Dr Soule is a writer and former academic, who completed his PhD in Linguistics in Glasgow, UK. Students gained valuable tips about how to write a thesis and dissertation. This workshop was specially focused on the process of writing itself, such as planning, creativity, editing and redrafting. Students learnt how to maximise their writing time and to assess the quality of the final text.
Induction Day Social Reception
The committee kicked off the academic year by hosting a Cheese and Wine Reception for postgraduate students. The event was held in Staff Common Room on October 4th. New and existing students from across the different Departments in the College of Medicine and Health enjoyed getting to know their fellow postgrads over a wide variety of cheese, bread and fruit accompanied with red and white wine.
