A chairde,
Our Guest Speaker this month is Dr John Borgonovo, Lecturer, School of History, UCC who will give a talk on the Irish Revolutionary Period.
John says: "I am committed to making my scholarship accessible to the wider public. I have been involved in numerous collaborations with local cultural stake-holders. Frequently I speak to local history societies and regional history festivals, and regularly appear in the national media.
I was born in San Francisco, USA, and earned a history BA at the University of Oregon. Fascinated by Irish history, I completed a History MA at University College Cork in 1997. Returning to San Francisco, I worked in the Internet industry for six years. While on a career break I produced my first book, 'Florence and Josephine O'Donoghue's War of Independence', which was compiled from memoirs, correspondence, and biographical material. It was followed by my research monograph, 'Spies, Informers, and the Anti-Sinn Féin Society', an updated version of my 1997 MA thesis, which examined the IRA's campaign against suspected civilian informers in Cork city. In 2006, I returned to UCC to undertake my PhD, funded by the UCC President's Scholarship. My dissertation looked at the radicalisation of Cork city public life from 1916 to 1918, as the First World War destabilised Irish politics and society. It was published as, 'The Dynamics of War: Cork City, 1916-1918' by Cork University Press in 2013.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Le meas,
Mary

As well as giving talks to both expert and lay groups, he has recently been interviewed on radio (https://www.rte.ie/radio/lyricfm/clips/21557873/). This research is of broad interest, taking in everything from chemistry to history. Prof. Ó Macháin brings his subject so vividly to life as you will gather if you listen to the radio interview, so we are surely in for a treat.
Is mise,
Mary (Mary Steele, Secretary to the UCC RSA)
Dear Members,
The RSA was founded in 2011 to provide social activities for retired staff and their spouses/partners.
After a break of two years we have had a very successful return to activities in 2022. As we approach the AGM on 14 March, I’d like to encourage you as a member to attend. It is an important opportunity for you to influence how your association is run. The positions of Secretary and Treasurer will become vacant as the present holders are taking a break after years of sterling service. I’ll remain as Chair for another year but will take a break for 2024. We would love to have a more diverse Committee representing all strata of the Association.
Committee meetings are usually held monthly, before the get-together (2nd Tuesday of each month and not in July, August or December) so it's not onerous for participants. It is a really friendly committee and a great way to meet new people.
If you are interested in an officer position or joining the Committee we’d be delighted to hear from you. Feel free to approach me or any Committee member with any queries. Perhaps you can’t commit to serving on the Committee but you’d like to help in some way, e.g. assist with accounts, organise a “one-off” event, help with Christmas lunch or Summer barbecue. RSA Get Together Tuesday, 13 Dec Visit to Cork Savings Bank and Afternoon Tea
A chairde,
For our final get together before the new year we are visiting the Cork Saving Bank, 1 Lapp's Quay.
Tim Cronin Buildings and Estates Office has very kindly arranged this special tour for us and gave me a few lines below on when UCC bought the building. It is now part of the UCC Business School:
1 Lapp’s Quay and 16 Parnell Place were acquired by UCC from the City Council in 2015. A design team was procured in 2016 and the works contractor was procured in 2017. The first event was held in Lapp’s Quay in November 2018, so less than 3 years from acquisition to opening.
2 00 pm Meet at the entry to the Cork Savings Bank for a tour of approximately 30 minutes.
This will be followed by a special Christmas treat:
3 00 pm Afternoon Tea in the Maldron Hotel, South Mall. This includes sandwiches, cream cakes, scones, mince pies
Please let me know immediately if you are free to attend this event but not later than lunch time Friday, 9 December as I need to confirm the numbers to Tim and the hotel.
Hope to see you there.

b) Study on a new non-invasive method of joint diagnostics, specifically knee.
Dear Mary,
My name is Liudmila, I am a final year PhD student at Tyndall, UCC. We are currently running a study on a new non-invasive method of joint diagnostics, specifically knee. It’s acoustic-based, so we are interested in all the types of noises that knees make.
We are unfortunately having some trouble finding participants that are over 60. Would it be possible for us to advertise our study among the members of the retired staff association? I can come by personally to be able to answer any questions if you have any meetings planned, or just bring over some leaflets. Please let me know if that’s something I can do and if you’re willing to help with this matter.
I am attaching an advertisement poster (details below), participant information leaflet and consent form for additional information about this study, but in short, participants are required to visit Tyndall once for a less than one hour session, we would stick a sensor on their knee and ask them to cycle on a stationary bike for about 10 minutes at a low pace, nothing particularly physically demanding.

I am passionate about personalised nutrition and a functional approach to health. I love educating people about healthy eating and empowering them to make informed choices when it comes to their diet & lifestyle.
Research is showing that all systems in our body are connected, taking a more holistic look at our bodies and health, and looking at the root cause of conditions, rather than just treating symptoms, makes for sustainable lasting improvements to our health.
Nutritional Therapy is an evidence based approach to maximising ones health through individualised diet and lifestyle changes.
I love helping clients to see how enjoyable healthy eating can be and how making simple lifestyle changes can bring amazing benefits.

Catching Stories Project:
My apologies it has taken me so long to get back about this project.
Following Cliona and Beth's talk for us the following were some areas we can discuss.
1. Catching stories - we can do this on the website: catchingstories@corkfolklore.org
We can write up any story ourselves directly onto this website or do a group project and then submit it.
2. The Chronicles of Covid-19 questionnaire. Again we can do this as an individual or as a group
3. Our own stories particularly about our time in UCC - this is our own project on how we catch our own stories/memories of our time in UCC.
We have our monthly get together on Tuesday next 8 February at 2 00 pm as you know and I thought we could remain on at the end of that Get Together and discuss the next step. I can ask those not interested to leave the meeting. We normally end around 3 15 to 3 30. Would that time be ok for you all?
I shared Cliona's email with all the websites etc in my email of 11 November headed Follow Up UCC RSA Get Together of 9 November Catching Stories and Hill Walking.
Le meas,
Mary
A chairde,

Maeve will give us a talk on her work and show us how to get started. A great project for the New Year I think you will agree. For those of you who may not know Maeve - she is an artist and a UCC colleague who is part of the Retired Staff Association.
Maeve McManamon was born in Sligo and moved to Cork in 1976. Maeve always loved painting and made many friends through her art. She initially worked primarily with oils and soon transitioned to watercolours. Today, she continues to work in both mediums. The beauty of nature inspires her greatly and it's clear to see in her work. Themes of sky and reflections on water are prevalent in her painting. Maeve has exhibited in the Lavitt Gallery, Henchy's of St. Lukes, Dungarvan Gallery, Ballyvolane House, Cappoquin Kinsale Arts Festival, Schull Arts Festival and Carrigaline Art Studio. Maeve has also exhibited further afield in Apremont, France and in Chennai, India.

I received the email below which may be of interest to some of you.
Hello Mary
We would like to let you know about FitLine, a free Age & Opportunity initiative that your members might be interested in.
Age & Opportunity is the national organisation that provides a range of opportunities for older people who want to get more involved in arts and culture, sport and physical activity, civic engagement and personal development.
FitLine, is a volunteer peer-led telephone based motivation line which encourages older adults to introduce physical activity into their daily lives. FitLine is designed to help people who want to feel a bit healthier but just don’t have the motivation, confidence or information on where and how to take that first step. Participants receive a friendly check-in phone call every 2 weeks from our volunteer mentors.
FitLine is funded by the HSE and Sport Ireland and is part of the Keep Well campaign.
FitLine volunteer mentors provide encouragement and ideas about how older adults can do simple physical activities as part of their day to day routine to suit their own lifestyle, and to provide information about clubs, groups and facilities in their own communities.
If you or any of your members would like more information, or would like to sign up for FitLine, please call Freephone, 1800 303 545 or email fitline@ageandopportunity.ie.
Kind Regards

November 16, 2020 - Notification from Mary Steele, Secretary to the UCC RSA
A chairde,
As you know, our year had got off to a great start with the decluttering talk in January which came in very useful during the lockdown frenzy of tidying. Professor Philip O'Kane explained at our February talk how the flooding problem in Cork could be solved by constructing a tidal barrier which would be much cheaper than the scheme proposed by the OPW, still a very controversial issue. On 2nd March we had a film outing to the Triskel Cinema to see "Parasite", an Oscar winning film, preceded by an Early Bird Dinner in Jacobs on the Mall. We were lucky to have our AGM on 10 March before all our activities ceased from 13 March due to the Covid19 restrictions.
Pensioners Christmas Lunch and Ecumenical Service
You will have seen the message on your October payslip that the pensioners Christmas lunch 2020 has been cancelled. The note on the payslip was the most straight forward way of letting all the UCC pensioners know this. We are grateful to the Payroll Office for facilitating us as we only have contact details for those who are members of the RSA. Some pensioners may not have spotted the message on the payslip so please let your UCC retiree friends and colleagues know. We are all very disappointed but hopefully we will be back to organising our social activities sometime in 2021.
The Ecumenical Service for Pensioners/Retired Staff/Deceased Members has also been cancelled.
Subscriptions
At the Committee’s recent ZOOM meeting it was decided to carry forward the 2020 subscriptions paid to 2021. Under the constitution, the final decision on this will need to be taken at the AGM in March. We will be in touch about the AGM in the new year when we see how matters are unfolding.
Hilary Doonan RIP
The Committee were saddened to hear of the sudden death of Hilary Doonan RIP, a former member of the Committee. Hilary was a very hard-working member, and we wish to acknowledge her commitment, contribution and support of the association and especially for the setting up the “Short Walks Group”. A vote of sympathy will be conveyed to Hilary’s family.
Lastly, please mind yourselves and stay safe and well and hope we’ll all meet in the not too distant future.

September 28, 2020 - Notification from Mary Steele, Secretary to the UCC RSA
A chairde,
Today we learned about the sad death of our dear friend and colleague Hilary Doonan RIP.
The Retired Staff Association would like to offer our deepest sympathies to her family, especially to her daughters Francesca and Rachel, at this time. Hilary was a wonderful colleague and friend. She was a tremendous support to the Retired Staff Association which she joined on retiring from UCC in 2009. She served on the committee for several years and went on to set up the Short Walks Group in 2010 which has continued with great success every week since then.
Hilary was a hugely talented person and leaves behind an amazing legacy of kindness, knowledge ,friendship and fun with so many people across all walks of life.
I think you will agree, we are all the better for having known Hilary.
Ní bheidh a leithéad ann arís.

We hope that you are all managing well during this very strange time.
We wanted to let you know that we have been in touch with UCC to see whether they could give us any idea of when we will be able to resume our monthly get together. Barry O'Brien, Director, HR said that it will take a few more weeks before they can advise us on this.
We will keep you informed of any further update from UCC.
It is wonderful to have more freedom to travel further now.
