Hi all

I am sorry to report that we have to cancel the RSA event planned for tomorrow Wednesday in the Council Room
I got call from Shane Lehane, our presenter this morning to say he is feeling very ill and on advice from his doctor he has to cancel all his work for this week.
Shane sends his apologies to all RSA members that he cannot present to us tomorrow due to illness.
He will follow up with a presentation to us early in the new year.

May I take this opportunity to remind you all to return the Christmas Lunch Form and Renewal of RSA Membership Form for 2025 together with payment of €20 for Lunch and €20 for Renewal of RSA membership to the HR Dept, UCC as soon as possible.
If paying by cheque, please make it payable to UCC Retired Staff Association. 
We, the RSA Committee will be meeting towards the end of November to send out the Xmas Lunch Tickets for the 10 th December.

Shane will talk to us on the Irish Folk Year giving us an overview of customs, traditions and folklore in the Irish context.
Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Staff Dining Room.

Dear Colleagues,
I hope everyone is keeping well. I am just sending out this email, as a gentle reminder about the two events scheduled for your attention in October.

They are as follows:
  1. October 10th,  Speaker Tadgh Crowley, Senior Curator- Education & Community at the Glucksman and Irene Ni Shuilleabhain, UCC Green Campus Greenshoots Coordinator.
Tadgh and Irene  will meet us at the Glucksman Foyer at 2.00pm and give a tour of UCC Lower Grounds covering combination of the interlinks between biodiversity and art on campus. The Tour will take 90 minutes and we will return to the River room at 3.30pm for refreshments. 
It is important to bring rain gear on the day if forecast is for showers, drizzle etc. 
University College Cork campus is rich in biodiversity and participants will learn about some of the 451 flora and fauna that make this urban oasis their home. The new Biodiversity Trail is built on a long history of supporting nature in this urban environment  and it provides an accessible space for those who are new to wildlife watching, as well as being enjoyable for seasoned naturalists. The guided walk will highlight how artists interpret and represent biodiversity, starting with a focus on key works within the Groundwork exhibition before heading out on the trail where participants will be given basic creative approaches and materials to allow them to respond to the University arboretum, wildflower meadow, and River Lee.
Coffee/Tea and refreshments will be served in the River Room at the Glucksman after the tour.  
  1. Details of exciting External event  for RSA members scheduled for Thursday October 17th, 2024
The RSA Committee has organised a bus trip to visit Charles Fort, Kinsale with beautiful lunch booked for Actons Hotel, Kinsale afterwards. 
 
Details are as follows:
  • Coach is free to you as participants
  • Cost of tour at Charles Fort is just €4.00 per person
  • Lunch to cost €30.00 per head. Money for lunch will be collected on the Coach Bus.
Plan for the 17th is as follows:
  • Coach leaves Western Gateway Building at 10.00am for Kinsale
  • Guided Tour of Charles  Fort booked for 11.00am-12.00 
  • Coach then takes participants to Acton's Hotel 
  • 2 course lunch with tea/coffee afterwards will be served at 1.00pm
  • People get choice of either starter or desert with a choice of fish, meat or vegetarian dish for main course/ dinner . Tea/coffee served afterwards.
  • Coach brings everyone back to base at Western Gateway Building afterwards
Please confirm your interest in participating in the Trip to Charles Fort by emailing me by 4th October at the latest, as I need numbers Charles Fort and Actons Hotel for the lunch.

I hope you are all well and enjoyed the Summer with family and friends. 
My colleagues and I in the RSA Committee have been busy planning and organising events for your enjoyment for next few months. I trust you will all enjoy the list of diverse events we have now scheduled for September, October, November and the Annual Christmas Lunch is scheduled for the 29 th November.

The monthly presentations for September, October and November are as follows:

Dear all, 
 
I hope everyone is keeping well.
I am the bearer of sad news this evening. Liam Cotter passed away yesterday and his funeral mass is tomorrow Thursday at 1.00pm at the Church of the Immaculate Conception , The Lough.  May he rest in peace.
Liam was one of the founding members of the UCC Retired Staff Association and he made a huge input to the organisation of the Christmas Lunch every year.

Hi all,

I hope everyone is keeping well and enjoying summer weather with family and friends.

We had a wonderful presentation from Theo Dorgan on Thursday last 13th June and Theo gave a fabulous overview on The Great Book of Ireland afterwards in the Boole Library.
It was a momentous occasion, as the Great Book of Ireland is truly spectacular and a wonderful repository of the work of the great poets and artists of Ireland in the late 20th century. 

We will share some photos and information on  the Retired Staff Web Page later this week

REMINDER re the Annual RSA BBQ on the 27th June at 7.00pm
The cost of the ticket for  the BBQ is €25 Euro for RSA members and €35 for non members.
This will include a free drink on arrival.
Please confirm your attendance with me by  21st June.
Ticket money to be sent to the RSA c/o Eileen O’Brien, HR Office, University College Cork by 21st June.
We need to give final numbers for catering on Monday 24th June.

Dear Colleagues, 

I hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine the last few days. 
We have two interesting RSA events planned for month of June. They are as follows:

On 13th June, Theo Dorgan, Irish poet, writer, lecturer and ex graduate of UCC will present to us in the Council Room at 2.00pm and afterwards Theo will give us a tour of "The Great Book of Ireland" which is in the Boole Library. Refreshments will be served in Staff Restaurant after the event. 

On 27th June at 7.00pm,  the Annual RSA Barbeque will be held in the Sundays Well Tennis Club.

Details for the Barbeque are as follows:
  • Ticket cost: Euro 25 for members/ Euro 35 non members
  • Ticket will include fabulous buffet meal and one drink on arrival. All other drinks to be paid separately.
  • We are organising a musician also for the event so bring your dancing shoes!!!
If you are interested in attending please forward your name to me by Friday 14 th June

Dear Colleagues, 
I hope you are all keeping well and in good spirits as we look forward to summer months and hopefully lots of sunshine. 
Photos from our visit to see the Lord Mayor on 14 th March can be viewed on the Image Gallery page.
It was a lovely event and I hope all that attended enjoyed the morning.
 
On the 11th April, we held the AGM for the Retired Staff Association. 
The three Officers; Catherine O Brien, Chairperson, Pleun Maaskant, Treasurer and myself as Secretary plan to continue for another year. Many of our RSA Committee are also staying on and Ann Mc Cann is joining us for 2024/25. 
Minutes of the UCC RSA Committee AGM held on 11th April 2024
 
Upcoming events for your Diary include:
  1. We have a planned visit to Fota House and Gardens at 1.15pm on the 9th May. Fota House will provide us with complimentary tea and coffee on arrival in the Grand Hallway at Fota House at 1.15pmWe have booked a combination tour of Fota  House and Victorian  Working Garden.
    The guided tour lasts approx 1 hour and the group rate negotiated is 9 Euro.
    The combination tour takes in the lower ground floor of the house and the Victorian Working Gardens which are located behind the main house next to the formal gardens.
    As the cafe at Fota House is closed for renovations, attendees can gather for tea/coffee and cake in Brambley Lodge after the tour. 
    Fota House management are offering complimentary car parking to the group so on exit you need to press the intercom at the barrier and mention you are with the UCC Group and the barrier will be lifted.

  2. Theo Dorgan, Irish Poet and Writer,  will present to us on the 13th June at 2.00pm in the Council Room , UCC.
    Theo Dorgan will give us a tour of The Great Book of Ireland - 'Leabhar Mor na hEireann' in the Boole Library afterwards

Dear all,
 
I hope everyone is keeping well and looking forward to Easter and better weather hopefully.
 
Many thanks to all that attended the Visit to the Lord Mayor's Office on the 14 th March. It was a very interesting day and the Lord Mayor spoke about the history of the City Hall and the Office of the Lord Mayor with great knowledge and passion. I am waiting on the group photo which was taken on the day and I will share that with you all, as a lovely memory. Roy Cummins has uploaded some photos taken on the day to the RSA page on the UCC website. 
 
The planned events for the next few months are as follows:
  • On Thursday, 11th April  the AGM of the Retired Staff Association will be held in the Council Room at 2.30pm. 
    All are welcome and I will send out the Agenda for the AGM next week

  • On Thursday, 9th May at 2.00pm we have organised a Visit to Fota House and Gardens.
    I have negotiated a group rate of €9.00 per person for the Combination House & Victorian Working Garden Tour which lasts approx. 1 hour.  The combination tour takes in the lower ground floor of the House & the Victorian Working Gardens which are located behind the main house next to the formal gardens. Fota House  will offer tea/coffee & cake in the café before the tour at rate of €6.00 per person.  

    Total cost per person for the event is €15.00 which is fantastic value.

  • On Thursday, 13th June, 2024 we will have a presentation from Theo Dorgan, Irish Poet and Author in the Council room to be followed by a 45 minute  overview  of The Great Book of Ireland/ Leabhar Mór na hÉireann in the Boole Library by Theo Dorgan. Check out https://www.theodorgan.com  Theo is a graduate of UCC and it will be great to welcome him back to speak with us, as retired staff of the college. 

  • On Thursday, June 27th at 7.00pm we will host the Annual Barbeque in Sunday's Well Tennis and Cricket Club for all RSA members

As you can all see we have an action packed list of events planned  for the next few months. I hope  many of you  will be able to attend and enjoy  catching up with friends and colleagues.

We are scheduled to visit the Lord Mayor's offices and get a presentation from the Lord Mayor, Cllr. Kieran Mc Carthy. The visit usually lasts 45 minutes. Refreshments will be served in the Lord Mayor's chambers.
 
The Lord Mayor's Office can only accommodate 30 people so do get in touch me with and book your place by emailing me at mogrady@ucc.ie . Look forward to seeing you there.

  • Using MyAccount on Revenue;  how and where you can  access basic information

Dear Colleagues,
Belated New Year Greetings. I wish you all good health and happiness in the year ahead and I look forward to updating you regularly about RSA events organised by the committee.
I am very excited that Maeve Langford has agreed to present at our first RSA meeting in January.
