Venue:              Council Room
Time:                2 00 pm

This will be followed by tea/coffee/cake/chat in the Staff Dining Room from 3 00 pm.

Our Guest Speaker this month is  Dr John Borgonovo,  Lecturer, School of History, UCC who will give a talk  on the Irish Revolutionary Period

John says:  "I am committed to making my scholarship accessible to the wider public. I have been involved in numerous collaborations with local cultural stake-holders.  Frequently I speak to local history societies and regional history festivals, and regularly appear in the national media.

I was born in San Francisco, USA, and earned a history BA at the University of Oregon. Fascinated by Irish history, I completed a History MA at University College Cork in 1997. Returning to San Francisco, I worked in the Internet industry for six years. While on a career break I produced my first book, 'Florence and Josephine O'Donoghue's War of Independence', which was compiled from memoirs, correspondence, and biographical material. It was followed by my research monograph, 'Spies, Informers, and the Anti-Sinn Féin Society', an updated version of my 1997 MA thesis, which examined the IRA's campaign against suspected civilian informers in Cork city. In 2006, I returned to UCC to undertake my PhD, funded by the UCC President's Scholarship. My dissertation looked at the radicalisation of Cork city public life from 1916 to 1918, as the First World War destabilised Irish politics and society. It was published as, 'The Dynamics of War: Cork City, 1916-1918' by Cork University Press in 2013.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Dessie Fitzgerald Talk
Dessie Fitzgerald in association with Laya Healthcare Dessie shares his story and speaks about how his life was turned upside down when in just a 14-month period, at the age of 29 he sustained a life changing spinal cord injury playing sport and tragically lost 2 of his brothers in separate incidents. After this session you can expect to feel motivated and empowered with tools to help you overcome challenges you may face within and outside of the workplace. Techniques are shared to increase confidence, productivity and overall well-being, encouraging people to become more content with “who they are”.

April 6, 2023 - Notification from Mary Steele, Acting Secretary, UCC Retired Staff Association

A chairde,

We have a great treat in store for us at our  Get Together on Tuesday next 11 April 2023.  A fabulous jump into spring we hope.
Venue:    Council Room
Time:       2 00 pm
Guest Speaker:  Mr Brian McCarthy from Cork Rooftop Farm will speak to us about:
How the Cork Rooftop Farm came to be
No-Dig Market Gardening
Regenerative Agriculture and How it Can Help with Climate Change
Future Plans for Cork Rooftop Farm

The farm was started by Brian and his friend Thayane (Thay) Carlos.  They transformed a baron grey 6,8000 sq. ft . roof in the heart of Cork city into a green fertile farm.  Their project is so relevant to global issues facing us today.  Imagine being able to obtain fresh, delicious locally grown food with no air miles, little or low carbon footprint and not taking up valuable land space.  The garden has been featured in radio and TV programmes.

I'm sure this is a talk that will be of interest to all of us gardeners who may learn some tips on growing vegetables,  non-gardeners who may learn how we can purchase delicious vegetables and those without a garden who may be interested in volunteering.

Line Dancing:  Line Dancing will go ahead starting on Wednesday 17 May in the Kampus Kitchen.  We need to pre pay for this class so those who have already signed up and who will be at the Get Together on Tuesday please bring 50 Euro to pay for the classes (6 classes for 50 Euro).  For those not present, I will make  alternative arrangements for you to pay.

Wishing you all a Happy Easter.

Special Invitation to a private guided viewing of an extraordinary modern manuscript
followed by Afternoon Tea

A US manuscript comparable in beauty to our own Book of Kells is on loan to the Boole Library. This modern hand-illustrated Bible, which has been described as America's Book of Kells, will be on show for a special event for members of UCC's Retired Staff Association this coming Tuesday 21st March at 2.00pm in the Rare Books Room of the Boole Library.

The Saint John's Bible, with its intricate lettering and breathtaking illustrations, is the culmination of an extraordinary $8 million project, ten years in the making, and seeks to imitate the beauty of European medieval manuscripts like those created here in Ireland in our Saints and Scholars era.

The Gospel and Acts volume of the Saint John's Bible Heritage Edition has kindly been loaned to UCC's Boole Library by the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University, to mark 25 years of international education partnership between our institutions.

We are lucky to have a number of wonderful 'tour guides' joining us on the day. As well as historian and Deputy Director for International Education Marita Foster, we will also be joined by Clare Kouri, a College of St Benedict/St John's University student who is studying abroad in UCC this semester, and by Cronán Ó Doibhlin, UCC Library Head of Collections.

The visit will be followed by a  complimentary Afternoon Tea in the Staff Restaurant.

February 6, 2023 - Notification from Hattie O'Sullivan, Chairperson, UCC Retired Staff Association

Dear Members,
The RSA was founded in 2011 to provide social activities for retired staff and their spouses/partners.

After a break of two years we have had a very successful return to activities in 2022. As we approach the AGM on 14 March, I’d like to encourage you as a member to attend. It is an important opportunity for you to influence how your association is run. The positions of Secretary and Treasurer will become vacant as the present holders are taking a break after years of sterling service. I’ll remain as Chair for another year but will take a break for 2024. We would love to have a more diverse Committee representing all strata of the Association.

Committee meetings are usually held monthly, before the get-together (2nd Tuesday of each month and not in July, August or December) so it's not onerous for participants. It is a really friendly committee and a great way to meet new people.

If you are interested in an officer position or joining the Committee we’d be delighted to hear from you.  Feel free to approach me or any Committee member with any queries.  Perhaps you can’t commit to serving on the Committee but you’d like to help in some way, e.g. assist with accounts, organise a “one-off” event, help with Christmas lunch or Summer barbecue. There is always a welcome for anyone who would like to offer their skills.

Sincerely,
Hattie O’Sullivan (Chairperson) UCC Retired Staff Association (h.osullivan@ucc.ie)
Mary Steele, (Secretary) (marysteelecork@gmail.com)
Eileen O’Brien (Treasurer} (e.obrien@ucc.ie)
Committee Members 2022: Anne Kelly, Liam Cotter, Ruth McDonald, Charlie Daly, Eleanor O’Connor, Esther O’Farrell, Eileen Barry and Ann McCann
