Women's Rights and Life in Iran

11 Oct 2022

Presented by the Department of Sociology and Criminology, UCC

October 12th at 5pm, Boole 1

The “morality” police of the regime in Iran routinely subjects women and girls to arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment for not complying with Iran’s oppressive compulsory hijab law. On 13 September 2022, 22 year old Mahsa Amini was arrested by Iran’s “morality” police. She was violently beaten in a police van, went to a coma and eventually passed away in the hospital. Her death sparked widespread protests nationally and internationally. In Iran, the protests have been met with a deadly crackdown. Security forces of the Islamic regime of Iran have repeatedly used unlawful methods to silence any dissenting voice. They have fired live ammunition and metal pellets at protesters at close range, misused tear gas and water cannons, severely beaten people with batons and detained large number of protestors, activists, journalists and athletes speaking out about the situation. Iranian authorities are shutting down the Internet to hide their crimes. This seminar will focus on the recent unrest and protests in Iran in light of women’s rights and life in Iran, and to demonstrate that it is time for the state members of the UN Human Rights Council to help tackle impunity of the Islamic Republic of Iran as a fellow state member for their grave crimes against humanity. Presenters: Dr. Mastoureh Fathi, Hasti Yavari and Dr. Amin Sharifi Isaloo
