Stroke by Stroke: Building Community at UCC Through Golf

Nestled within the vibrant campus of University College Cork, the Staff Golf Society stands as a testament to the power of community, wellness, and interdisciplinary connection. Established in 1979 by Eric Tully and Robert McNamara, what began as a modest gathering of 12 golf enthusiasts has blossomed into a thriving society that celebrates both sport and social engagement.
A Rich Tradition of Community
Current Captain Steve O'Brien brings a passionate perspective to the society's mission. "Golf is far more than just a game," he explains, "it's a metaphorical journey through life itself." Drawing inspiration from Andrew Greig's book "Preferred Lives," Steve highlights the unique social nature of golf - a sport where players spend three and a half hours together, with actual play time measuring just minutes.
The society has evolved to become a crucial social outlet for university staff, offering a rare opportunity to connect across disciplines, departments, and career stages. This year, they're making a particular effort to welcome UCC researchers, recognizing the often isolating nature of research work.

Wellness Beyond the Fairway
The health benefits of golf extend far beyond simple physical activity. Steve passionately outlines the multiple dimensions of wellness the sport offers:
Physical Benefits:
- Walking 3.5 to 5 miles per round
- Burning approximately 1800 calories
- Improving heart health
- Increasing vitamin D exposure
- Potentially lowering diabetes risk
Mental and Social Benefits:
- Stress relief
- Strategic brain engagement
- Intergenerational social interaction
- Building cross-departmental friendships
A Unique Competitive Spirit
Unlike many competitive sports, golf offers a unique approach to competition. The society's handicap system allows players of all skill levels to compete fairly, focusing on personal improvement rather than absolute performance. "You're
really playing against yourself," Steve notes, "constantly challenging your own abilities and growing as a player."
The society maintains a Golfer of the Year table, with top performers earning the prestigious opportunity to represent UCC in the intervarsity competitions - a tradition UCC itself initiated in 1987.
Welcoming Researchers: A Special Invitation
Recognizing the intense and often solitary nature of research work, the society has introduced reduced rates specifically for UCC researchers. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Dr. Rosarii Griffin, aims to provide researchers with a unique opportunity to:
- Connect with colleagues across the university
- Engage in regular physical activity
- Build professional and social networks
- Enjoy a supportive, inclusive community
2025 Highlights
- Nine planned outings
- The First event: Meet and greet at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club

- Potential to represent UCC in intervarsity competitions
A Living Tradition
The society celebrates not just current members, but the rich history of past golfers. Members range from young professionals to seasoned players in their 80s, demonstrating the timeless appeal of the sport.
"We're more than a golf society," Steve emphasizes. "We're a community that celebrates friendship, personal growth, and the joy of shared experience."
