Celebrating Irish Research: IRC Legacy Awards Shine a Light on Excellence

We’re proud to share a major highlight from the world of Irish research. Taighde Éireann – Research Ireland has announced the winners of the 2024 IRC Legacy Awards, celebrating the incredible achievements of researchers supported by the Irish Research Council (IRC) before its merger with Science Foundation Ireland.

 

Researcher of the Year
Professor Christine Casey, Professor of Architectural History at Trinity College Dublin, was named Researcher of the Year for her internationally respected work on the architecture of Dublin and the early modern interior across Europe, Britain, and Ireland. (Read more)

Impact Award
Dr. Jakub Gajewski of the RCSI Institute of Global Surgery received the Impact Award for his groundbreaking global health research aimed at strengthening surgical systems in underserved countries—work already influencing international healthcare policy. (Read more)

Early Career Researcher of the Year
We are particularly proud of UCC’s Dr Aaron Lim, Lecturer in Marine Geosciences who was awarded the ‘Early Career Researcher of the Year’ for his groundbreaking work in seabed habitat mapping and marine monitoring. As Director of the MSc in Applied Coastal and Marine Management and Head of UCC’s Earth and Ocean Lab, Dr Aaron Lim has advanced research in coastal and deep-sea environments across the North Atlantic and Irish waters. Celebrating Research Allies
This year’s awards also recognised the often-unsung heroes of research: supervisors, mentors, research officers, and technical staff. These Research Allies play a crucial role in supporting Ireland’s vibrant research community. (Full announcement)
