School of Pharmacy Researcher Receives International Award for Work in Biomaterials

23 Oct 2025

Congratulations to School of Pharmacy PhD researcher Ethan Morrisey, who has been awarded the Dr Lawrence Salvati Jr. Award at the 2025 BioInterfaces Conference in Tempe, Arizona.

The award recognises exceptional student research in surface science and biomaterials, supporting emerging scientists who are advancing innovation in the field.

Ethan’s research focuses on developing a novel therapeutic coating for angioplasty balloons to improve drug delivery in the treatment of narrowed arteries. His work uses a cold atmospheric plasma coating process to strengthen the bond between the drug coating and the balloon surface, helping more of the drug reach the artery wall effectively.

He is supervised by Dr Katie Ryan and Prof Abina Crean (School of Pharmacy, UCC) and Dr Liam O’Neill (TheraDep).
