IT Staff Spotlight: Marian Twomey
Marian Twomey works as an IT Analyst in the Digital Advisory Centre (DAC). Marian reflects on key moments from her life and career to date, and what it’s like to work in IT Services.
Life and career before UCC
I grew up just outside Tramore in Co. Waterford and studied at what was then WRTC (now SETU), completing a diploma in Professional Administration. After a short time in Dublin, I moved to London to work. At 20, I was diagnosed with leukemia and spent six months in hospital there undergoing intensive chemotherapy. I was fortunate to make a full recovery, an experience that taught me early to appreciate life’s small joys and the unwavering support of my family.
When I returned home, I joined a pharmaceutical company that was about to implement System Applications and Products in Data Processing (SAP), which then led me into a training role. I completed a three-year computing course by night while delivering software training by day. From there, I became Training Manager in a smaller IT company, spent a short time in Lisbon teaching English, before putting down roots in East Cork. I worked as a contract trainer before joining the UCC Training Centre in 2003.
Working in IT Services, UCC
During my time in the Training Centre, I designed and delivered classroom-based training to UCC staff across many Microsoft apps, managed the ICDL Testing Centre and provided software support to staff. I moved to the Digital Advisory Centre which was established to empower staff in using technology in a modern digital workplace. My role now includes coordinating the monthly IT Tips and Tricks, facilitating or delivering our DAC Learn Live sessions, developing learning resources, and supporting staff with M365 apps. When I’m asked about my role in IT (especially if I suspect a friend is about to request hardware repairs!), I often explain I’m more like the driving instructor than the mechanic, I teach people how to use the tools rather than fix them.
My colleagues in the DAC and across IT Services are consistently helpful, friendly and supportive, both professionally and personally. I’m grateful to have achieved a good work-life balance and appreciate the UCC policies that make balancing career and family life easier.
Tell us about life outside UCC
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time, often over good food, with family and friends. My husband is the chef in our house and I am happy to be chief taster. Life is busy with our 3 daughters involved in many activities, and I've spent many hours supporting and coaching camogie teams at Aghada GAA Club. I am a strong advocate for girls and women in sport and still hope to celebrate an All Ireland Camogie win for Waterford with my Dad.
Our spaniel, Rolo, keeps me active with daily walks. I love meeting friends for walks and coffee and I also enjoy Pilates
