UCC continues strong spin-out and start-up performance

21 Jun 2018

Publication of the Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey 2017 by Knowledge Transfer Ireland (KTI) reports strong performance for University College Cork in research collaborations, business engagement and commercialisation activity.

The survey’s findings show University College Cork (UCC) as having the highest industry research income of all Irish Universities for the fourth consecutive year. UCC is reported to have executed the highest number of licences, options and assignments and the highest number of student/staff start-up established along with Dublin City University.  UCC is also reported as having the highest number of spin-outs along with University College Dublin.

Overall results from the survey indicate that collaboration with Irish industry is thriving and there is a robust pipeline of technology licences, spin-out companies and products reaching the market.

Speaking about the report’s findings, Professor Anita Maguire, Vice-President for Research & Innovation at UCC said “The results of this year’s Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey show continued strong performance in UCC’s level of engagement with industry and sustained levels of new venture creation, building on the creativity and excellence of our researchers and research centres.”

“These results confirm UCC’s status as an incubator for successful and sustainable new venture creation and hub for start-up companies.”

“The impact on the economy from public research funding is impressive and highlights the focus on innovation within the Irish research sector as well as the benefit of the continued investment in technology transfer by the Enterprise Ireland and KTI.”
