The aim of Innovation Week is to showcase some of the excellent innovations from across the UCC ecosystem, and to encourage UCC students, graduates, and researchers alike to think about the different ways that their ideas and research can be transformed to create economic and societal impact.

€3.2M licence income distributed over last 5 years from UCC’s commercialisation activity
12 Mar 2025€3.2M of UCC licence income has been distributed university-wide over the past 5 years, with €1.3M distributed to inventors and a further €920K distributed to inventors’ schools and research centres. These are among the figures reported in UCC’s Innovation Impact Report for 2024, launched today by Vice President for Research and Innovation, Prof John Cryan and Director of UCC Innovation, Dr Sally Cudmore.

UCC and INFANT spin-out company Cergenx secures FDA support for neonatal brain injury device
20 Jan 2025CergenX, a pioneering Irish neurotech company specialising in AI solutions for neonatal brain monitoring, has announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Breakthrough Device Designation for its innovative “Wave” device. Additionally, CergenX has been accepted into the FDA’s Total Product Lifecycle Advisory Program (TAP).

UCC spin-out company CergenX wins Irish Times Innovation Award in Life Sciences & Healthcare
13 Nov 2024UCC spin-out company CergenX has been awarded the prestigious Irish Times Innovation Award in the Life Sciences & Healthcare category, sponsored by Research Ireland.
This award celebrates their innovation in neonatal brain health, particularly with their new, easy-to-use brain-monitoring technology called Wave. The Wave device helps identify newborns in need of extra support or treatment, with the aim of reducing the impact of brain injury on their lives.

UCC performs strongly in the 2023 Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey
23 Aug 2024UCC has featured in the top 3 rankings for almost all technology transfer outputs in Knowledge Transfer Ireland’s (KTI) 2023 Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey.
The Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey is a comprehensive report on knowledge transfer activities in Ireland, published annually by KTI. The survey, which collects data from Ireland’s Higher Education Institutes including eight Universities, five Technological Universities, two Institutes of Technology and two Colleges, also incorporates contributions from Teagasc, the Marine Institute and Irish Manufacturing Research (IMR).

IGNITE Alumni - Trustap raises $5.5m in Series A funding

The Quercus Talented Students’ Programme supports and promotes excellence in academia, sport, creative and performing arts, active citizenship, and innovation/entrepreneurship. The Quercus programme awards up to three scholarships each year to students registered on an undergraduate/level 8 programme, who demonstrate an exceptional level of excellence in the innovation and/or entrepreneurial space.

UCC spins out new medtech start-up
08 Jan 2024- NeuroBell has developed an AI-powered medical device to accurately detect seizures in newborns, which can reduce the risk of long-term brain injury.
- Seizures are the most common sign of brain injury, signalling the need for urgent treatment that can prevent further seizures and improve outcomes.
- The start-up has secured an investment of €2.1m to fund product development, clinical trials, and the creation of new jobs.
