Participants

90 children living in the south Munster area will be recruited for the research study.

The test group will be made up of 30 children who have spina bifida with shunted hydrocephalus. The control group will be made up of 30 typically developing children with the same age as the test group and 30 children with the same language level as the test group.

Children who have spina bifida hydrocephalus will be recruited through their speech and language therapist or doctor in the south Munster area. Typically developing children will be recruited from schools in the Munster area. In order to be included in the study the children must meet the criteria outlined below.

 

Children with Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus
  • Aged between 7 years and 12 years.
  • Have a diagnosis of spina bifida with shunted hydrocephalus.
  • Have no known hearing difficulties.
  • Are exposed to Irish-English language (English spoken with an Irish accent) in school and/or at home for the last three years.
  • Have lived in Ireland for the last 3 years.

 

Typically Developing Children
  • Aged between 5 years and 12 years.
  • Have no known learning, speech, language, hearing, nor physical disability.
  • Are exposed to Irish-English language (English spoken with an Irish accent) in school and/or at home for the last three years.
  • Have lived in Ireland for the last 3 years.
