National University of Ireland (NUI) Travelling Doctoral Scholarships 2026 competition

The Department of French at UCC would be delighted to hear from prospective applicants to this scheme. Please note that to be eligible you must either be (or expect to be by June 2026) a graduate of a NUI university or already registered as a PhD student at an NUI institution.
We are very pleased to note that this year there will be a special focus on French Studies: to mark 100 years of partnership between NUI and the French Embassy in Ireland, one NUI-French Embassy in Ireland Travelling Doctoral Studentship will be offered among the four travelling doctoral studentships available for 2026. Eligible applications will involve one or more of the below:
  • A research project with one or more research trips to France
  • A research project in French studies
  • A research project in partnership with a French research laboratory
  • A doctoral research programme hosted in a French higher education institution. 
To be eligible applicants must also:
  • Hold an Honours Bachelor's degree or an ordinary Bachelor's degree and a relevant Master's degree
  • Have obtained at least a 2.1 or equivalent in one of their degrees (or a Master's degree by research)
  • If candidates are still awaiting degree results, they may apply if their results are confirmed to NUI by 19 June 2026 or immediately following the spring/summer exam board meetings
  • If candidates have already begun PhD studies, they must be in the first year of their studies at the time of application
  • And have not already applied to this studentship more than once (if a previous applicant, you must include a statement of application changes with the application)
  • And not be full time permanent NUI University staff members
  • Be able to register for their degree full time.
Applicants will need to include 2 confidential references that support their pursuit of doctoral studies in their application.
