Focusing on Stendhal's peculiar autobiography, Vie de Henry Brulard, this talk argues that taste is configured as a function of textual space. And yet, for Stendhal as for Agamben, taste is 'inappropriable', it continually escapes our attempts to locate it in the body, in language, or in our environment.
Patrick Bray is Professor of French Literature at University College London. He is the author of three books,
The Novel Map,
The Price of Literature, and
Retours proustiens. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief of
H-France Salon and is currently the director of the Centre for French and Francophone Research
at UCL.
