On Tuesday October 28th the seventh consecutive IPL Dementia Workshop took place in the Aula Maxima University College Cork.

There were over 170 students from all disciplines within the College of Medicine and Health participating. The Workshop was an ideal opportunity for all students to come together and discuss; the holistic care of the older patient with dementia, to understand the role of the various health professionals and to understand the value of good communication in healthcare.

The Cork University Dental School was represented by BDS IV students Mark Muldowney, Ayan Niazi, Roisín Nolan-Collins, Michaela Ronan-Hynes and Jose Monagas. All students acknowledged the significance of patient centred care and valued the opportunity to engage with students from other healthcare professions.

A huge thanks to Niamh Moore (Radiography), Trish O’Sullivan (Physiotherapy) who made the whole event possible, and to Dr Tony Foley (General Practice), who  presented on his experience in general medical practice and working with communities and the care of the older patient with dementia.

For the second consecutive year Ms Anne Twomey, Director of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland spoke from the perspective of the carer, being an advocate for services, research and learning in dementia and emphasised the value of all students in healthcare learning together.
