CGR journal paper: The Irish Independent

4 Nov 2025

People living with Parkinson’s disease in Ireland have spoken about suffering from stigma, alienation and isolation.

Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation found stigma was frequently encountered in social situations where people with the disease felt “pitied, misjudged or closely observed by others”

It is estimated that there are currently about 15,000 people in Ireland living with the progressive neurodegenerative disorder, which is caused by a loss of dopamine, leading to tremors, stiffness and slowness of movement.

Congratulations to Prof. Suzanne Timmons, Dr. Emma O’Shea and Fran Gaiera (PhD candidate) all of CGR, on the publication of Social experiences of people living with Parkinson’s disease in Ireland: A qualitative study’ within the Clinical Parkinsonism & Related Disorders journal.

The work of Fran, Suzanne and Emma on this project was recently highlighted in the Irish Independent, and we are very pleased to share the link below.
