Upcoming Workshop: Dr Elena Kavanagh "Arctic Voices – Indigenous Leadership and Self-Determination in Arctic Governance"

The Indigenous Right Cluster, CCJHR, is pleased to announce that the Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), University of Cambridge, will host UCC researcher Dr. Elena Kavanagh for an insightful workshop on Indigenous Leadership and Self-Determination in Arctic Governance.
This talk will explore the role of Indigenous paradiplomacy in Arctic governance, highlighting how Indigenous peoples assert their rights and contribute to sustainable development amid geopolitical challenges. Dr. Kavanagh will critically assess the legal frameworks that shape Indigenous participation, focusing on the "continuum of urgencies" in Arctic decision-making.
A key theme of the discussion is the "Two-Eyed Seeing" approach, which integrates Indigenous and Western knowledge systems to address pressing environmental and political issues. The workshop will also examine whether cross-border Indigenous organisations, such as the Saami Council, can effectively address governance challenges that nation-states struggle to resolve. This timely research contributes to international law debates on Indigenous self-determination, participatory rights, and regulatory frameworks governing Arctic paradiplomacy.
