In the News: Recognition of Gender Identities and the ECHR: PhD candidate, Tanya Ni Mhuirthile Opinion (Irish Times, Nov 1st)

Tanya Ni Mhuirthile, PhD candidate at the CCJHR, comments on the implications of the recent High Court judgment in the long running Lydia Foy case. The case raises the issue of gender recognition, and, in particular, the rights of transsexuals in Irish law. In the Foy case, the High Court announced its intention to issue the first declaration that the law in Ireland was incompatible with the State's obligations under the European Convention on Human Rights.
