Child Protection and Children's Constitutional Rights
Child Protection and children's constitutional rights will be the subject of an inter-disciplinary seminar organised jointly by colleagues in the Departments of Law, Applied Social Studies and the Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century Children (Young People Research Cluster) at University College Cork on Friday 19th November at 12pm.
The event, the second in a series of seminars dealing with children's rights and the Constitution, is designed to help tease out the implications of proposed constitutional change on social work practice in the area of family support and child protection. It will hear from speakers with vast experience of social work practice, litigation and the advocacy of young people in care with a view to raising awareness about the issues affecting children at risk and discussing how the state should respond. Speakers include Denise Kirwan, Partner, Comyn Kellher Tobin Solicitors, Barry Murray, Social Worker and Child Care Manager HSE South, Jennifer Gargan, Director of the Irish Association of Young People in Care and Ursula Kilkelly, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law. The speakers will address the efficacy of Ireland's law and policy framework to ensure children are protected from harm and will discuss the role of the Irish Constitution in ensuring that children's voices are heard and their rights protected.
The event will be attended by a diverse group of over 120 practitioners, researchers and academic colleagues in law, social work and related areas.
