UCC celebrates John Hegarty and Irish Educational Foundation’s impact

UCC recently welcomed alumnus John Hegarty (BComm ‘65) to campus to honor his 30 years of dedication to international fundraising for UCC through the Irish Educational Foundation (IEF).
John, who is the Treasurer of the Irish Educational Foundation (IEF), has facilitated the donation of gifts from the USA to Cork University Foundation (CUF) and UCC in a tax effective manner for nearly 30 years. Supported by the Board of the IEF the impact has been significant.
John’s visit also marked the end of the relationship between UCC and the IEF and coincided with UCC’s international fundraising in the US, transitioning to Chapel & York US Foundation.
Cork University Foundation is pleased to announce its new partnership with the Chapel & York US Foundation which will enable the university to continue accepting donations from the US. Donations may be made through the Alumni and Development website or via the Chapel & York website. Chapel & York will then make grants/payments to CUF for the benefit of UCC. This partnership enables donors to continue supporting University College Cork with tax deductible donations in the US - meaning their gift stretches further allowing UCC to accomplish even more.
US taxpayers can also make a Donor Advised Gift to The Ireland Funds America, a US 501(c) (3), charitable non-profit corporation that is recognised under US law.
Professor Ursula Kilkelly, Vice President Global Engagement on behalf of UCC, made a presentation to John to thank, acknowledge and recognise his and the IEF Board’s contribution to philanthropy for UCC. John, who runs his own successful Accountancy Practice in Boston, is a former Treasurer and member of UCC’s Boston Alumni Chapter.
Also recognised on the day were the current IEF Board members, Chairperson and President, Fergal Brennock (UCC BE 1993); Secretary, Darina Gilley Chesterton (UCC BA 1988); Executive Committee member John Kilbride (UCC BE 1965); and Board member Eamon McGrath (UL) along with all former Board members and those who are no longer with us - Brian O’Donovan (UCC BA 1978); Dr Michael Mulcahy (UCC BSc PhD 1956); and Dr Christopher Walsh (UCC MB 1955).
