Passing the Torch, One Gift at a Time

Jumoke Afolabi MSc 2023

Jumoke Afolabi graduated from UCC in 2023 with a master’s degree in nursing. Originally from Nigeria and now living in Dublin, Jumoke works as both a general nurse and registered children nurse. Apart from her academic and clinical activities, she is very passionate about community engagement. She volunteers supporting local projects and contributing to programmes that promote wellbeing and social connection.

Jumoke is an annual supporter of the UCC Alumni Fund, which collects donations from alumni and friends of any amount meaningful to them. Collectively, the donations add up to make a profound impact on the UCC student experience through new projects across campus each year.

Having recently commenced a PhD programme in public health at UNICAF University, she took a few minutes to answer questions about how she felt welcomed in Ireland and the UCC community, and why it’s meaningful to her to pay it forward however she can for the students following in her footsteps.

How has UCC played an important part in your life?

UCC has made a significant and profound impression on me as a student with an international educational background. The UCC International Education Centre supported me until I arrived in Ireland. Still now it is impossible for me to forget that warm welcome I got at the airport which helped to ease my worries about finding my way to my school and my new accommodation in an unknown place and gave me a lot of relief and comfort on my first day in Ireland, making it a fairly easy transition to the academic system here.

The academic environment of the university made it easy to shift from the intellectual demands of my previous schooling to those of higher education in Ireland. The support of the Student Center cannot be overstated, it is invaluable. They provided me with important information and help for my effective integration into UCC. The academic atmosphere of UCC and a kind and compassionate group helped me to successfully adjust to a new culture. With the diversity on campus and support from student clubs and international networks, I could find important connections and create a feeling of community.

Why do you give to the UCC Alumni Fund?

When I think back to my time at UCC, it’s not just the lectures that I remember. It’s the people who inspired me, the experiences that challenged me, and the sense of belonging that helped me flourish. I give to the UCC Alumni Fund in honour of such experiences. It’s like passing the torch, ushering another person into a chapter that potentially transforms their lives the way UCC has changed mine.

What does supporting UCC students mean to you personally?

My own educational path in Africa was made possible by the kindness of others. I grew raised in a system where skill often surpassed opportunity, and through generosity I was given the opportunity to further my studies. So I realise the power that help has – not just financially but emotionally and academically as well.

Supporting UCC students is a means of paying back the investment others made in my life. It’s about establishing an environment where every student, no matter their background, feels they belong and can thrive. I want to provide compassion, advice, and motivation, particularly to individuals who feel unseen or overwhelmed. My own life experience gives me insight into the issues students confront, and how to respond with compassion, cultural awareness and practical support.

What would you say to others who might be considering donating to support UCC?

With your support, UCC will continue to deliver a great education and a robust student experience. As an alum, your gift strengthens the university that shaped your journey and provides future graduates with the same opportunity to thrive.
