School of Engineering Prizegiving 2024
This year's School prizegiving attend was very well attended. With the award winning students came family members and friends and the industry sponsors were delighted to attend and say a few words. Our prizegiving is our opportunity to recognise the quality of our students and thank them for their commitment and hard work. We are very grateful for the contributions from the employers themselves who assume a critical role in what we do, as any student who has done a work placement will attest to. Congratulations to all our students who we are very proud of!
Some of the outstanding awards that were acknowledged are as follows:
The Dr Paul Cahill Memorial Prize is in memory of Dr Paul Cahill who died in August 2022 and is donated by Paul’s family.
This prize honors Paul’s commitment to research and learning by recognizing the outstanding dissertation in the BE/ME in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. Value is €500. Eligibility is from two modules:
4th year Final Year Project (CE4002) for BE (Hons) graduates, and
5th year Dissertation (CE6009) for ME graduates;
This is an automatically awarded prize, no application is required. This year’s recipient is CSE ME student Daniel O’Callaghan .
The Dr. Elmer Morrisey Memorial Scholarship provides an annual Scholarship in the value of 1,500 Euro to an outstanding student in any of our undergraduate engineering programs that in addition to excelling academically also made impactful contributions to student life in UCC.
This year's recipient of the award is the 4th year student of Energy Eng, Fionnuala Murphy.
The Joe Gantly Prize also celebrates the memory of an outstanding contributor to our community that was also taken from us way too early. Joe Gantly is known to many here for his influential work in industry and the business community, having served in UCC's Governing Body. His contribution to the community also included having been President of Cork's Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors this award in his memory.
The Prize is awarded to the student that makes the best presentation about his 8-month long work placement in one of our Integrated Masters programmes.
This year’s winner from the ME in Energy Engineering, is Kate O’Callaghan.
The runners up are,

and from Process & Chemical Engineering Chloe Ferris.
The Prof. Gerard Wrixon Prize in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.
The Prize is awarded to the student that graduates top of his class in the 5-year ME in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (highest final aggregate marks), consisting of a medal and a cash award.
The recipient of the Prize this year is Conor Moloney.
The Cork Electronics Industry Association Prize is sponsored by the CEIA -
The Prize is awarded to the student that graduates top of his class in the 4-year BE in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (highest final aggregate marks), consisting of a medal and a parchment.
The recipient of the Prize this year is Leah Twomey.
The Qualcomm most Promising Electrical/Electronic Engineer Award - this award it is given to the 1st year student with the highest mark in EE1007, the introductory module of Electrical and Electronic Engineering that all 1st year students take, and that goes on to select the Electrical & Electronic Engineering degree in 2nd year
There were 2 prize recipients this year: Fearghal Desmond and Luke Ennis.
Qualcomm EEE Excellence Award (new this year)
This award, which consists of a prize of €5,000, is made to the student who achieved the top percentage graduation mark in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (BE or ME programmes) which shall not be lower than 80%. Also, the student should have achieved first class honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in each year of study at UCC. This years recipient is Leah Twomey (her second award today).

Next we are delighted to announce yet another award sponsored by Qualcomm. This award is the Qualcomm Excellence to the Community by an Electrical Engineering Student Award
Awarded to the best EEE student on a blend of their academic achievement and their contributions to UCC and the community. A similar award to the Elmer Morrissey award. The winner of this years first prize of €1,000 is Klaudia Serafin
Runner up Ananyaa Sharma is awarded €500.
The Engineering Postgraduate Research Publication of the Year is a prize awarded by the School, sponsored this year by Qualcomm
The winner of the 2023 publication of the Year is Jiaxiang Zhu
For the paper entitled: “Modelling of a General Lumped Compliance Beam for Compliant Mechanisms”

The Horner Best Poster Award. The Horner Best Poster Award is for the Best Poster presentation in Electrical and Electronic Engineering BE Capstone Project as part of the Annual BE Project Open Day in the Discipline
This year's winner is Sean Coombes, with runners up Aisling McEvoy and Leyi Huang
The Statkraft awards in Energy Engineering: Awarded to: The BE Energy Engineering students who achieves the highest overall marks in the examinations across 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of the programme at the first attempt. (bursary of 2,000 Euro each)

The John Joseph McCarthy Prize in Civil & Environmental Engineering .
John Mac Carthy and his wife Geraldine established the John Joseph McCarthy Prize in Civil & Environmental Engineering in 2005. The prize was set up in memory of John’s father Mr John Joseph McCarthy, who himself was a BE 1947. It is offered to the final year students of Civil and Environmental Engineering who have contributed significantly to sport at UCC.
