This Bursary is in memory of Dr T. A. Neville (1904-1999) and is co-funded by the Neville Family & John Fitzgerald (UCC BE Civil, 1984).
The Bursary aims to encourage participation and enhance the development of young student rugby referees for UCC Rugby and the Munster Association of Referees (MAR).
With a Bursary value of €1,000, it is awarded annually, and the awardee will be an active member of UCC Rugby Club and MAR. They will referee and touch judge and attend MAR meetings and workshops during the season.
Tom Neville’s association with UCC RFC spanned seven decades. Educated at CBC Cork, he captained a successful senior cup team and the Munster Schools team. He entered College in 1922, where he studied Medicine. While in UCC he played second row, both for the College and Munster. He was captain of UCC RFC in 1926-27.
When his playing days were over, he became an active administrator. He coached many successful UCC teams, refereed and served on the Irish Universities Rugby Committee and on the Munster Branch, becoming President in 1969.
He served 3 terms as President of UCC RFC in 1962-64 and again in 1974, when he was conferred as Centenary President, which he recognized as the highest honor.
