Creating a Culture for Responsible Conduct of Research

UCC is committed to ensuring the highest standards of integrity in all aspects of our research. Good research practices are based on fundamental principles of Research Integrity such as:

  • Reliability in ensuring the quality of research, reflected in the design, the methodology, the analysis and the use of resources.
  • Honesty in developing, undertaking, reviewing, reporting and communicating research in a transparent, fair, full and unbiased way.
  • Respect for colleagues, research participants, society, ecosystems, cultural heritage and the environment.
  • Accountability for the research from idea to publication, for its management and organisation, for training, supervision and mentoring, and for its wider impacts.

This award recognises exceptional efforts made by researchers to foster a culture of responsible conduct of research at UCC. Such efforts can be focused broadly or more specifically in the areas of:

  • Good research practices and ethics.
  • Data management.
  • Publications and authorships.
  • Mentoring and supervision.

Nominations can be made by any UCC staff member.

Evaluation Criteria

 

Commitment to Research Integrity

  • Demonstrated adherence to and promotion of the principles of research integrity (reliability, honesty, respect, accountability).
  • Efforts to embed these principles in research practices and culture.

Promotion of Good Research Practices & Ethics

  • Leadership in promoting ethical research practices (e.g., ethics training, policy development).
  • Implementation of measures to ensure compliance with ethical standards.

Data Management & Transparency

  • Adoption and promotion of best practices in data management (e.g., data sharing, storage, and reproducibility).
  • Transparency in data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Publications & Authorship

  • Advocacy for responsible authorship and publication practices (e.g., avoiding plagiarism, ensuring proper attribution).
  • Efforts to address issues such as predatory publishing or authorship disputes.

Mentoring & Supervision

  • Commitment to training and mentoring researchers in responsible conduct of research.
  • Role modeling integrity and accountability in supervision and mentorship.

Impact & Influence

  • Evidence of tangible impact on fostering a culture of research integrity at UCC.
  • Influence on colleagues, students, or the broader research community.
