UCC and University Hospital Kerry Mark World Antimicrobial Awareness Week with Collaborative AMR Event

20 Nov 2025

To mark World and European Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18 to 24 November), University Hospital Kerry Antimicrobial Pharmacist Dr Síle O’Connor and colleagues welcomed MPharm students Éibhín Cronin and Emma Kearney, and Dr Aoife Fleming to their WAAW event.

Éibhín and Emma are working on an antimicrobial stewardship MPharm research project and this was a fantastic opportunity for them to engage with stakeholders in this area and become stewards of the future.

Colleagues from University Hospital Kerry Nursing, Pharmacy, Microbiology, Surveillance, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Medicine, Gerontology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Paediatrics were all represented at the event. The main message was to promote the prudent use of antibiotics to fight the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

The event was an opportunity to share and highlight the recently published 'Patient and Staff Stories of Sepsis, Infection and Antimicrobial Resistance', commissioned by the Department of Health.

It was wonderful to have the report's Post-Doctoral Researcher, School of Pharmacy alumnus and MTU Tralee pharmacy colleague, Dr Clara Heinrich, Assistant Lecturer, present, and we were also honoured to have a visit from Dr Eamonn Shanahan, GP Tralee, who contributed to the report.
