School of Pharmacy Researchers Secure Funding for Mental Health and Cancer Studies

Two researchers from the School of Pharmacy, UCC have each received €30,000 in funding through the College of Medicine and Health Academic Health Sciences seed funding awards (AHS Awards). The grants will support innovative research into brain cancer treatment and peripartum depression, reflecting UCC’s commitment to addressing critical healthcare challenges.
Dr Maria Donovan’s project, Investigating Mechanistic Predictors of Interpatient Variability and Temozolomide (TMZ) Induced Haematological Toxicity for Glioma Patients (IMPROVE TMZ), aims to better understand how individual patients respond to Temozolomide (TMZ), a key drug used in treating glioma, a type of brain cancer. Working with Prof Jack Gleeson, Dr Donovan’s research could lead to more personalised treatment approaches for patients.
Dr Rachel Moloney’s study, PreDICT- Peripartum Depression: Inflammation as a Clinical Target, investigates the link between inflammation and peripartum depression, a condition that affects up to 20% of pregnant women. In collaboration with Prof Sarah Kittel-Schneider from the School of Medicine, the research could open new avenues for treating mental health issues during and after pregnancy.
These awards are part of the College of Medicine & Health’s Academic Health Sciences System, launched in 2022, which strengthens collaboration between researchers and healthcare providers to deliver impactful solutions for regional and global health challenges.
