School of Pharmacy Outreach Highlights Career Pathways for Secondary School Students
Throughout December, staff and students from the School of Pharmacy engaged with secondary school pupils in schools and on campus, creating opportunities to explore careers in pharmacy and healthcare.
On 2 December, Prof Christian Waeber and fifth-year pharmacy student Lauren O’Leary visited St Angela’s College, Cork, to speak with Transition Year and senior cycle students about pharmacy as a career. The session brought together academic insight and student experience, prompting discussion around pathways into pharmacy and the realities of the profession.
This was followed on 4 December by a visit to Edmund Rice College in Carrigaline, where PhD researcher Jack Murray represented the School of Pharmacy at a STEM outreach event alongside colleagues from the Schools of Chemistry and Food and Nutritional Sciences. Jack spoke about his PhD research and the evolving roles of pharmacists, offering students a clear picture of both research life and professional practice.
Later in the month, on 10 December, the School contributed to the College of Medicine and Health’s ‘H4Y: Careers in Healthcare for You’ event at University College Cork. Hosted in the Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, the event welcomed students from across Munster to explore healthcare programmes through hands-on activities and direct engagement with staff. Pharmacy was represented by Dr Teresa Barbosa, Dr Ken Devine, Dr Edel Burton and Robbie Callaghan, who met students curious about future careers in healthcare, many of whom were encountering these options for the first time.
Through these conversations, students gained a more realistic picture of the range of careers pharmacy can lead to.
