Pharmacy Practice Workshop Focuses on Supporting Patients with Vision Impairments

10 Nov 2025

For the first time, first-year pharmacy students at University College Cork took part in a workshop designed to help them understand how vision impairment can affect patients’ experiences of care.

Held as part of the PF1011 module, the interactive session encouraged students to think differently about accessibility in community pharmacy practice. Using simulation glasses, they experienced what it might feel like to read medication labels with limited sight. They also practised guiding techniques, handled braille materials, and listened to personal experiences and recommendations from people living with low vision.

The workshop invited students to reflect on practical ways pharmacists can make everyday healthcare more inclusive, from clearer communication to creating environments that help every patient feel seen and supported.
