Darren Breathnach, PhD Candidate, Named Pharmasource Hospital Pharmacist of the Year

Darren Breathnach, a PhD candidate and adjunct clinical lecturer in the School of Pharmacy, UCC, was named Pharmasource Irish Hospital Pharmacist of the Year at the Hospital Professional Honours, held on 14 September 2024. This award recognises his impactful work in geriatric oncology and his efforts to enhance patient care models.
Darren graduated with a BPharm degree in 2012 and qualified as a pharmacist in 2013. In 2016 he joined the Oncology Department in University Hospital Waterford, and has since become an integral member of the Geriatric Oncology Assessment and Liaison (GOAL) Clinic, Ireland’s only Geriatric Oncology Clinic.
His PhD research, supervised by Prof Laura Sahm, Dr Michelle O'Driscoll, and Dr Anne Horgan, evaluates the implementation and impact of a clinical pharmacist in an outpatient geriatric oncology clinic.
This latest honour follows Darren’s 2023 award as the International Society of Geriatric Oncology Nursing and Allied Healthcare Investigator of the Year.
The School of Pharmacy congratulates Darren on his achievement.
