Students Explore Research at the School of Microbiology
This summer, the School of Microbiology welcomed seven undergraduate MB3 students to participate in its Undergraduate Research Experience in Microbiology Programme. Students Jason Norris, Kyle O'Ceallachain, Ella Chute, Aisling Mc Auliffe, Tess Sexton, Rose O’Neill, and Moritz Kaestner spent 8-10 weeks immersed in their own research projects in the school’s research labs being mentored by research staff and PI’s.
The summer placements provided students with the opportunity to experience life as researchers, working alongside academic staff and postgraduate researchers on a range of laboratory-based projects. Throughout the programme, students developed practical laboratory skills, gained first-hand insight into the research process, and explored potential future career pathways in microbiology and the broader life sciences.
The programme offers students a valuable opportunity to build confidence in a research environment while applying knowledge gained during their studies to real-world scientific challenges.
Professor David Clarke, Head of the School of Microbiology, said: "It is always a pleasure to welcome undergraduate students into our research laboratories during the summer months. Research placements play a vital role in developing the skills and enthusiasm of our undergraduate students. By engaging directly with research, students gain experience and develop the confidence needed to pursue future scientific opportunities.
We are delighted to support the next generation of microbiologists and look forward to seeing how these experiences contribute to their future studies and careers."
The students also reflected positively on their experience. One participant commented: "Being part of an active research group was both challenging and rewarding. I gained confidence in the lab, learned from experienced researchers, and had the opportunity to contribute to a live research project. The experience has given me a greater appreciation for the impact microbiology research can have."
The School of Microbiology is proud to support undergraduate research opportunities and congratulates all students who participated in this year's programme. We wish them every success as they continue their studies and future careers in science.
