FaME Ireland Symposium: Connecting and sustaining exercise programmes for older people. Dublin, 17th December 2024

19 Dec 2024
FaME Ireland Symposium 2024

The first FaME Ireland symposium for falls and exercise programmes was facilitated by Ruth and the UCC FaME Ireland core management team, and hosted in the RCSI Albert Lecture Theatre in Dublin.  Over 30 delegates attended, all with an interest or involvement in exercise for older people and falls prevention programmes.  Engagement at the event was fantastic with discussion around developing, connecting and sustaining exercise and physical activity programmes for older people in Ireland.

The day opened with presentations from Dr Ruth McCullagh and Professor Dawn Skelton to set the scene for the day and to provide an overview of the FaME programme within the context of falls prevention services and the evidence base for falls reduction/hospital admission reduction.

We were delighted to then have a series of presentations from a range of experts involved in the planning, policy and service delivery of community based older people's care, exercise promotion, active aging and training and education of healthcare staff across Ireland.

The afternoon was spent in workshops and groups, where we worked together to continue to map the links and synergies at policy and service level.  The whole day provided a fantastic opportunity to network and look at the next steps to work together to increase and expand the offerings to older people to evidence based community services to prevent falls and increase mobility.

More information and presentation materials are available from the day - please contact the FaME Ireland team if you want any further information.
