Exploring Communication and Diversity in Mathematics Education

The School of Education, UCC hosted ETC22, an international conference bringing together researchers from 16 countries to explore communication and diversity in mathematics education, with a particular focus on language, meaning-making and methodological approaches.
UCC hosted the 22nd ERME Topic Conference (ETC22) from 24–27 August 2026, bringing together researchers in mathematics education from across 16 countries. Under the theme “Communication and Diversity in Mathematics Education: Exploring Language, Meaning Making and Methodologies,” the conference provided an international forum for researchers to share and critically discuss research examining the increasingly diverse linguistic, cultural and educational contexts in which mathematics teaching and learning take place.
The conference welcomed 51 participants, including 11 early career researchers, with delegates representing institutions across Canada, China, the Czech Republic, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the USA. Across four days, participants engaged in research presentations, poster sessions and extended collaborative discussions. A dedicated Early Career Researcher programme also provided opportunities for emerging researchers to develop their work, engage with experienced scholars and build connections within the international mathematics education research community.
ETC22 placed particular emphasis on dialogue and collaboration, creating space to examine different theoretical and methodological perspectives and to consider how research can better respond to communication and diversity in mathematics education. The conference also provided an opportunity to showcase research being undertaken within the School of Education and to strengthen existing and emerging international research collaborations.
