UCC research team present at IASSIDD, 7th European Congress, Munich

The ‘RED Framework - Cocreating Rights Enabled by Design [RED] for IoT in Intellectual Disability’ project, that is funded through the Taighde Éireann Research Centre for Future Networks and Communications CONNECT Centre, was among the poster award winners at the recent ‘International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities’ (IASSIDD), 7th European Congress.
The project team were awarded best poster within the category entitled, ‘Research including people with Intellectual and Developmental Disability’ at the IASSIDD Congress which took place in Munich, Germany, July 28–31, 2026. The project itself is exploring how ‘The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities’ [CRPD) can be integrated into design practices and embedded into the Internet of Things (IoT), focusing specifically on applications in intellectual disability [ID]. The principal investigator is Professor Eleanor Bantry White, Dean of Interdisciplinarity & Inclusion at University College Cork (UCC). Dr Catriona Curtin is a postdoctoral researcher on the RED Framework project. The team is an interdisciplinary collaboration between UCC (Professor Eleanor Bantry White, Professor Dirk Pesch, Dr. Catriona Curtin, Dr. Nicola Maxwell, Dr. Gill Harold, and Dr. Calvin Swords); Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) (Professor Gavin Davidson); and Praxis Care (Mr. Paul Webb).
Dr. Catriona Curtin presented both an oral and poster presentation at the IASSIDD European Congress 2026, on behalf of the ‘RED Framework - Cocreating Rights Enabled by Design [RED] for IoT in Intellectual Disability’ project team.
The poster presented was entitled, ‘The Benefits and Barriers of Researching through Virtual Environments for Participants with Lived Experience of Intellectual Disability’.
