SATLE grant awarded for the interdisciplinary "Thinking-with Memes" project
An interdisciplinary team from the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences was recently awarded SATLE funding to explore the political uses and counter-hegemonic potential of memes.
Co-PIs Dr Evelien Geerts (Philosophy/Women's Studies), Dr Gema Kloppe-SantamarĂa (Sociology), and Dr Yasmine Ahmed (Criminology) were awarded a large Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement Funding in Higher Education (SATLE) grant for the "Thinking-with Memes: Unlocking Critical Digital Literacy Skills in Times of Digital Mis/disinformation and Violent Democratic Erosion" project.
This critical pedagogies-driven project, which launches in October 2026, will zoom in on the political uses and counter-hegemonic potential of memes, AI-generated images, and other visual communication forms in times of digital mis/disinformation and violent democratic erosion.
Through interdisciplinary research-led teaching across Departments, student-staff collaborative workshops, and a symposium, the "Thinking-with Memes" project wishes to enhance participants’, and specifically UCC students', critical digital literacy and global citizenship levels.
