Green Campus

About the Initiative

UCC is a globally leading Green University that is consistently in the top ten position of the UI Green Metric World University Ranking.  It was the first higher education institution in the world to achieve ISO 50001 Certification for Energy Management. In 2018 UCC signed on to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Investment.

Sustainability citizenship is encouraged across all aspects of University life and is integral to values and attributes of our students.

Beginning in 2007, Green Campus was the brainchild of Environmental Student Society. Today, it is still a student led partnership with staff to enhance our environmental performance and promote environmental stewardship throughout the region.

Its community outreach activities include its work with An Taisce’s national Green Schools Initiative, the UCC Farmers Market, and a University Wide Module in Sustainability that is open to the local community and via outreach hubs in Dingle and Skibbereen.

Award Winning Green Campus

From being the first university in Europe to be awarded a Gold Star from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education to its award winning Green Library Programme - UCC ranked 1st in the world for SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) a pilot of the new Times Higher Education Impact Ranking, based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
