As part of the Certificate in Social Citizenship with the id+ Project, Deirdre Lovett was one of 15 students in 2022/23 who completed a rewarding paid work placement. After a summer of hard work on her placement at The Kingsley, Deirdre went on to sign a permanent contract with the hotel.

Today, she is a valued member of the front office team and is known for having a wonderful presence at reception where she is always smiling and chatting with guests. We talk to Deirdre about how her time at university helped her, the memories she holds onto from campus, and how she finds fulfillment in her role at The Kingsley.

What did you study at UCC?

I did a course called the Certificate in Social Citizenship in UCC during the year 2022/2023.

How did your course help you?

I learned so many new things like how to use computers, money management, and I improved my communication skills. As part of the co-learning modules, I enjoyed mixing with students from other courses like Geography and Early Years and Childhood Studies. I really enjoyed hanging out with my Peer Support buddies.

What did you get up to after graduation?

Graduating was the most exciting day of my life. I was so proud in my cap and gown to walk up onto the stage and get my certificate from the President in front of my family members. We had a celebration afterwards in the hotel I work in, The Kingsley.

What do you like most about working in The Kingsley?

Getting my placement in The Kingsley changed my life completely. I love helping people who are lost and need a hand to get around the hotel. Guests are very kind to me and I love meeting them. I also work with a fabulous team - it has really given me huge confidence.

Any advice for current UCC students?

Enjoy the year, because it goes very quickly. Choose your work placement carefully and make sure it's something you'd like to continue afterwards.

Best memories from your time at UCC?

I really enjoyed meeting my new classmates and I loved walking around the campus. I loved the canteens and the variety. I loved travelling independently on the bus to college every day.
