Architecture plays critical role in the RIAI Architecture Competency Framework

23 Feb 2026

Dr John McLaughlin, Cork Centre for Architectural Education was part of a taskforce set up by the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI) to rewrite the RIAI Architecture Competency Framework and the RIAI Policy on Education which will both form the basis of national accreditation of architecture degrees. The aim of the taskforce was to bring the framework and policy into line with contemporary societal needs including addressing the climate crisis, as the construction sector is responsible for a large percentage of global carbon emissions and for a huge amount of material waste.

At the launch, the RIAI stated that -

"Architecture has a critical role to play in shaping a built environment that supports human wellbeing, environmental care, and economic vitality. The profession is well-positioned to contribute positively to major societal challenges, including climate change, demographic shifts, urbanisation, and the delivery of sustainable public infrastructure. As these challenges continue to evolve, so too does the role of the Architect. There is growing recognition of the importance of collaborative working, design-led thinking, and evidence-informed decision-making."
