Dr Daniel Nuzum receives Lord Mayor’s Civic Award in recognition of his commitment to spiritual and pastoral care and education in perinatal bereavement and palliative care

In recognition of his outstanding commitment to spiritual and pastoral care and education in perinatal bereavement and palliative care, Dr Daniel Nuzum, recently received a Civic Award from the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Deirdre Forde.

The annual awards celebrate individuals and groups from across the city who work tirelessly to improve their community, with six people receiving Lord Mayor’s Civic Awards in recognition of their efforts.

Daniel is a practical theologian and educator in pastoral theology, bereavement care, palliative care and communication skills. Currently an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at UCC, he completed a PhD between 2012-2016 on the spiritual and professional impact of stillbirth.

Daniel continues to research in the field of pregnancy loss as part of the Pregnancy Loss Research Group; his areas of interest include the impact of impact of stillbirth, spirituality in bereavement care, and men and miscarriage. He also delivers training on communication as part of the TEARDROP workshop, and has played an important role in the implementation of the National Standards for Bereavement Care following Pregnancy Loss and Perinatal Death, along with other members of the Pregnancy Loss Research Group.

Daniel is an accredited healthcare chaplain at Cork University Hospital and Cork University Maternity Hospital. He is also a certified Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor based at Cork University Hospital where he runs the Clinical Pastoral Education programme under the auspices of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (Ireland) Ltd. Daniel also serves as a member of the Pastoral Care Team at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, Cork working with the specialist palliative care service.

The Lord Mayor’s Civic, Community and Voluntary Awards ceremony, in its 20th year, was held in City Hall on 31 May 2023.
