Professor Derek C Stewart delivers inaugural PPI Seminar

On the 5th November, 2021, Professor Derek C Stewart delivered the first PPI Ignite Network@ UCC lunchtime seminar.
Derek's talk, which was entitled ‘Patient & Public Involvement - Make it Meaningful’, provided a brief overview of Patient & Public Involvement in research and focused on the purpose of involving patients and/or the public in a meaningful way that helps the research, informs the researcher and is informative for those who get involved. The talk also explored the added value and mutual learning opportunities as well as challenging some of the myths that exist.
Professor Derek Stewart was treated successfully for throat cancer in 1995. He subsequently became actively involved in patient involvement and advocacy at a local, national and international level being the founder Chair of the Consumer Liaison Group with the National Cancer Research Institute. Currently, Derek is involved with a number of research initiatives in Ireland. In 2006 Derek was awarded an OBE and in 2020, appointed Honorary Professor at National University of Ireland, Galway.
The seminar was recorded and is available to watch back here.
