Sean O' Regan
The PPI Ignite @ UCC Summer Scholarship provided me with a host of opportunities to learn and grow. It thought me invaluable practical skills around the organisation of studies, arranging and managing meetings, as well as data management and analysis. I worked closely with Family Carers Ireland to analyse data on the experience of carers in housing. The ability to work with outside groups on interesting projects with real world impact is a major positive of this programme.
This programme allowed me to form and work with a PPI working group to inform my project. This gave me a unique insight into what issues really matter for carers. This displayed to me the importance of involving the public in the scientific research which impacts them. As science becomes more collaborative with patients and the public the ability to effectively interface with these groups is growing more valuable. This programme gives you the chance to learn these skills in a hands on, well supported manner.
Ultimately, I would recommend this programme to anyone with an interest in performing scientific research. It teaches important skills, allows you to meet with and learn from experts in PPI, and gives a taste of managing a research project. The support given by the team within PPI Ignite @ UCC is invaluable as a learning resource to advance your knowledge of PPI and research in general.
