UCC School of Pharmacy renews Athena SWAN Bronze award

4 Apr 2022

The School of Pharmacy is delighted to announce that its Athena SWAN Bronze Award has been renewed in the most recent application round. The Bronze Award is in recognition of its continued commitment to gender equality.

“As Chair of the School of Pharmacy SAT, it was gratifying to work with the SAT who were there because of their belief in what Athena SWAN stands for; removing equality challenges creates a better and more productive workplace for all. It was only through much discussion and collaboration by the whole team that an application of this quality was developed. The success of the application however is due to the staff and students of the School. Their daily embodiment of the Athena SWAN principles is what drives improvement and delivers impact. Seeing this, I am confident that the best days are ahead of us.” Dr. Kevin Murphy, Chair of the Self Assessment Team

Since the initial Bronze Award in 2016, the School has implemented numerous changes to benefit the staff and students who work and study in the School of Pharmacy. Examples of such improvements include the Nursing Mothers/Baby Changing room and the increased representation of Research staff on the School’s governance structure.

The central ingredient to this successful renewal of the Athena Swan Bronze award in the School of Pharmacy is the commitment of our talented, creative and motivated staff over the past 4 years in promoting an inclusive, respectful, and equitable working environment – a place for everyone to enjoy scholarship and ensure that the learning environment for our students and creativity of our staff can flourish.  This Athena Swan Bronze award acknowledges the efforts in the School to advance equality in all its forms amongst staff and students. This will encourage us to seek further opportunities to achieve even more success and, in this sense, enable us to excel further as a place where staff and students can fulfill personal career goals.” Prof. Brendan Griffin, Head of the School of Pharmacy
