UCC-Maryland Study Named ACS Editor's Choice
Researchers from the University College Cork School of Pharmacy, in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, have published a study in Molecular Pharmaceutics that has been selected as ACS Editors' Choice.
This distinction, awarded by the American Chemical Society, recognises one paper per day across its entire journal portfolio. The American Chemical Society is one of the world's leading publishers in chemistry and related disciplines, highlighting the study's quality and broad scientific impact.
The paper, entitled "Reduced Resistances Model for Enhanced Drug Permeation via a Solubilizing Receiver Medium: A Mechanistic Study with Hollow Fiber Membranes," proposes a mathematical model to explain how solubilising ingredients can impact drug movement across membranes. Permeability testing is a fundamental step in drug development and aims to predict how well a medicine can be absorbed by the body. These results will help scientists design more reliable and predictive experiments, thereby reducing uncertainty when developing new treatments.
The work was supported through lead author Jack Murray’s PhD funding, including a Fulbright Scholarship and a Research Ireland grant. The study was co-authored by Roshni Patel, Dr Harriet-Bennett-Lenane, Dr Patrick O'Dwyer, Prof Brendan Griffin, and Prof James Polli.
