26 Jan 2024

The School of Pharmacy was delighted to host the Annual Meeting of the COLOTAN European training network between 8-12th January 2024.

More than 70 delegates attended this 5-day event, encompassing research updates from consortium partners, research training and project planning. The School was delighted to host our consortium colleagues from prestigious academic institutions including KU Leuven, Uppsala University, University of Copenhagen, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, University College London, University of Parma, along with industry leaders AstraZeneca, The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, Eurofins CDMO, and Pfizer.

The highlight of week was COLOTAN 4th Open Symposium, which had the theme of ‘Targeted Drug Delivery in The Gastrointestinal Tract: Current Status, Emerging Techniques and Blue Sky Thinking’. A wide range of speakers, across academia and industry, addressed delegates on the leading innovations in drug delivery and therapy in intestinal disease. A detailed overview of the symposium is available here.

COLOTAN deals with a topic of growing medical and societal concern: obtaining a sufficiently high drug concentration in the colon (large intestine) to efficiently treat diseases of the large intestine. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No. 956851. This international training program, combining 10 countries, focuses on innovative technological and scientific developments across a range of interdisciplinary fields such as (physical, analytical and organic) chemistry, drug delivery, drug disposition, cell biology, gastroenterology, microbiology and modelling and simulation.
