Professor Pat O'Mahony

It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely death of our colleague, Professor Pat O’Mahony. Pat was an Adjunct Professor here in the School of Pharmacy and a strong supporter of many of our initiatives, particularly in the area of Regulatory Science.

Pat was the current Chair of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) and the Chair of the Irish Medicines Verification Organisation (IMVO). In the past, he held many influential positions, including Deputy Secretary General and Head of Governance and Performance in the Department of Health, and he served as Chief Executive of the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) from 2002 to 2015.

He was passionate about extending the role of pharmacy and, in 2023, was appointed by the Minister for Health to chair the Expert Taskforce supporting this expansion. His strategic vision and wise counsel were sought by many, and his influence on pharmacy and healthcare policy nationally will be sorely missed.
