UCC’s Junior Conferring - the first and only programme of its kind in Ireland – today welcomed its 70,000th scholar: Leah Connolly from Scoil Barra in Ballincollig.

Developed by UCC Visitors’ Centre, the programme is renowned for its free and colourful tours for primary school children, which culminate in a mini Conferring ceremony and a procession around UCC’s iconic Quadrangle.

Since it started in 2005, the programme has wowed thousands of children annually, many of whom liken the University’s Gothic-style campus to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.

Demand for and the reach of the programme has grown every year, with schoolchildren arriving from across Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Clare and beyond.

“When the Junior Conferring Tours began I could never have imagined that we would hit such a significant milestone,” said JP Quinn, who has been Head of UCC Visitors’ Centre since 2005.

“It really is the highlight of our work and we look forward to our next 70,000 young visitors,” Quinn added.
