UCC hosts international yeast conference

UCC will host over 280 researchers from 40 different countries at the largest ever gathering of yeast researchers in Ireland at the 33rd International Specialised Symposium on Yeasts.
As part of a wider European movement, researchers at UCC are engaged in a number of projects investigating ways to boost the growth of a greener economy by using safe, sustainable biological resources as the raw materials for many of our everyday products. Of particular interest is the potential to use tiny yeast cells to produce a range of products including fuels, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, bioplastics, nutritional products, and flavours. As society recognises the need to move towards a cleaner, more sustainable economy based on renewables and cutting edge technologies, the potential contribution of yeast and other microbes is gaining an increased level of public interest and support.

Next week, some of the top researchers from universities and institutes around the world will join the leading brewing and wine yeast companies to present and discuss some of their most innovative research. This research is transforming how industries in Europe and around the world manufacture or produce their products. It is also advancing healthcare and economic sustainability, and opening up opportunities for SMEs and other businesses.
The focus of the meeting is exploring and engineering yeasts for industrial application and it has a particularly strong emphasis on developing the bio-based economy, and on meeting current challenges, such as the impact of climate change on wine production. Dr John Morrissey, the conference chair says βIt is a huge honour for UCC to have been selected as the location to host such a large delegation of researchers who are at the forefront of a very relevant, fast-moving, and forward-thinking field of research. We were selected in recognition of our position at the cutting edge of yeast research and because of the fantastic facilities available on campus and in Cork.
