The Glucksman Gallery to host Paper Party
More than 150 people will party in paper this evening (July 21) at the Glucksman, University College Cork as the gallery celebrates recent successes and the cultural vibrancy of Cork.
The European Commission recently named Cork as one of Europe’s ideal Cultural and Creative cities and made specific mention of the award-winning Glucksman in the report.

The Glucksman team will be literally having a ball, in the style of the early 20th century Bauhaus costume parties, and guests have been invited to dress up and accessorise in paper.
On arrival, guests will be treated to a special exhibition of paper artworks by 300 local children exploring climate change and the environment. The exhibition is a partnership with UCC’s Green Campus programme and highlights the vision young people have for creative and sustainable cities.
The event also marks the Glucksman’s full accreditation on the Museum Standards Programme of Ireland and the success of the sale at Sotheby’s London on 28 June 2017 of a Josef Albers oil on paper, which was donated by the Albers Foundation for the benefit of the gallery programmes. The artwork sold for a world record price at auction and the funds will now be used to establish curatorial residencies on campus, further connecting Cork to the global art world. In the Sotheby’s catalogue, Nicholas Fox Weber remarked:
“The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation is delighted to sell this powerful Homage to the Square on behalf of the Glucksman Gallery. We feel that this particular oil on paper represents the bold experimentation and true dedication to human seeing, and the thrills of courageous art, consistently achieved at this superb museum at University College Cork, Ireland. The small, innovative staff of the Glucksman, diligent and tenacious people of vision, embody the values the Alberses held most dear.”
UCC President, Professor Patrick O’Shea, will welcome Nicholas Fox Weber, an honorary graduate of UCC, to the paper party and commented that “the generosity of donors such as Nicholas Fox Weber means the Glucksman can continue to present an ambitious international programme here in Cork, and ensure that local audiences and communities continue to engage with us right here on campus”.
The Glucksman's Director Fiona Kearney said, “these achievements are the culmination of huge work by the team and point to the collaborative, creative spirit on campus and in the city. We are hugely grateful to our donors and corporate supporters such as EY who enable us to deliver ambitious programmes and make art accessible to all”
