UCC alum to head Galway-Mayo IT
UCC alumnus, Dr Fergal Barry of the Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT), has been appointed President of the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.
He joins four other UCC alumni as President of an Irish higher education institution: Professor Don Barry of UL, Dr Brendan J Murphy of the CIT, Professor Vincent Cunnane of the IT Sligo as well as UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy. Dr Barry has an Executive MBA from UCC.
Currently Vice President of Limerick Institute of Technology, Dr Barry has in the past few years built up the research capacity of the LIT to an annual revenue stream of over €5m towards projects in Science, Engineering and Art and Design, involving up to 150 post-graduate research students and full-time research staff. He has also developed LIT’s unique national profile as a leader in third-level enterprise supports, with six centres fully operational and one more under construction across the Mid West region. These centres have created 600 jobs and include the Hartnett Enterprise Centre on the main campus, the National Franchise Centre in Limerick City Centre, Thurles Chamber Enterprise Centre and Questum Centre co-located with LIT’s Tipperary campuses, and one more due to open soon, the International Fashion Incubator in Limerick.
Dr Barry has a background in Science and holds academic qualifications from LIT, UL, and UCC. It is expected that he will take up the role of President at Galway-Mayo IT in the autumn.
