UCC Celebrates 180 Years with Landmark Exhibition
A new commemorative exhibition marking 180 years since the foundation of UCC was officially opened by An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, this morning in the Boole Library.
This exhibition, Celebrating 180 Years: University College Cork in Society, illustrates UCC’s enduring role as a place where ideas, people, and communities converge to shape the future. Since its foundation in 1845, UCC has been at the heart of Ireland’s intellectual, cultural, and social development. Its alumni – leaders in education, politics, science, the arts, and sport – form a global network whose achievements reflect the University’s lasting impact.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin, a proud UCC alumnus, said: "University College Cork has been a cornerstone of Ireland’s intellectual and cultural life for 180 years. This exhibition is not just a celebration of the past, but a recognition of UCC’s enduring role in shaping our society and inspiring future generations."
As part of the anniversary celebrations, UCC has commissioned two acclaimed poets – Thomas McCarthy (BA 1975, UCC) and Dairena Ní Chinnéide to create original works honouring the university’s legacy. These commemorative poems will become a permanent feature under the Arch on UCC’s iconic Main Quadrangle, ensuring that the spirit of this milestone endures for generations.
Professor John O’Halloran, MRIA, President of UCC, said: "This exhibition is a testament to the foundational values that have guided UCC for 180 years - discovery, integrity, and equity. As we celebrate our past, we also reaffirm our mission to lead in education and research, collectively securing a better future for Ireland and the world."
